George Wood the son of John Wood and Hannah Heath, born at Gratton Staffordshire, in the year 1853.
George died on the 14 May 1919, at the County Mental Hospital Stafford. The death was registered by B H Shaw County Mental Hospital Stafford on the 15th May 1919. His address was 18 Congleton Road Biddulph Staffordshire. Occupation General Labourer.
The 1901 census shows George Wood was living at 18 Congleton Road Biddulph Staffordshire, which is the same address which is given on George’s death certificate. George was living there along with his wife Eliza Elizabeth and children Priscilla, Martha, Hannah, Ellen, Rachel, and Miles H.
On the Calendar of Prisoners Tried At The Assizes, there is a George Wood aged 55, Labourer, illiterate,. The Committing Magistrate A. Nicholson, Esquire, of Leek. Date of Warrant, the 10th August 1910. When received in to Custody, the 2nd August 1910, on remand. On the 1st August 1910, at Biddulph, feloniously wounding Annie Wood, with intent to murder her. 2nd count – with intent to do her, some grievous bodily harm. Found insane upon arraignment by a jury lawfully impanelled for that purpose. Ordered to be kept in strict custody until His Majesty’s pleasure shall be known.
On the 1911 census George’s wife Eliza Elizabeth was still living at 18 Congleton Road Biddulph along with daughters Hannah, Nellie, and Rachel son James and grandchildren Annie Wood aged 3. (Is this the Annie Wood referred to in the trial), and May Wood aged 1.
There is an Annie Wood who married Samuel Sproston 1930 at Biddulph St Lawrence.
On the 1939 register it shows Annie and Samuel Sproston living at 2 John Street Biddulph U.D., and Annie’s date of birth as the 24th May 1908.
